Resignation of bishop of Varaždin, Croatia, and appointment of successor

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Varaždin, Croatia, presented by H.E. Msgr. Josip Mrzljak.

The Holy Father has appointed as bishop of Varaždin, Croatia, the Rev. Can. Bože Radoš, of the clergy of the archdiocese of Đakovo-Osijek, currently rector of the Pontifical Croatian College of Saint Jerome in Rome.

Rev. Can. Bože Radoš

The Rev. Can. Bože Radoš was born on 5 September 1964 in Crvenice (diocese of Mostar-Duvno) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. After elementary school, he carried out his classical studies first in Zagreb and then in Đakovo (1979-1983). From 1983 to 1990 he studied philosophy and theology in Đakovo. He was ordained a priest on 29 June 1990. From 1991 al 1997 he studied spiritual theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University, obtaining a licentiate.

After priestly ordination he held the following offices: deputy priest in Osijek (1990-1991); spiritual director at the Major Seminary of Đakovo and assistant for the ongoing formation of young priests (1997-2016); lecturer in the Đakovo Faculty of Theology (1997-2016); and member of the presbyteral council (2013-2016). In 2010 he became canon of the cathedral chapter of Saint Peter in Đakovo. He is currently rector of the Pontifical Croatian College of Saint Jerome in Rome, a role he has held since 2016.

The Holy Father Francis has appointed His Excellency Msgr. Petar Rajič, titular archbishop of Sarsenterum and apostolic nuncio in Lithuania, as apostolic nuncio in Estonia and Latvia.

 

Appointment of Members of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches

His Holiness Francis has appointed the following Members of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches: His Eminence Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti, archbishop of Perugia-Città della Pieve; His Eminence Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra, archbishop of Madrid; His Eminence Cardinal Anders Arborelius, bishop of Stockholm; His Eminence Cardinal Luis Francisco Ladaria Ferrer, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith; Archbishop Anthony Colin Fisher of Sydney, Australia; Archbishop Georges Bacouni of Beurit and Jbeil of the Greek Melkites; Archbishop Borys Gudziak of Philadelphia of the Ukrainians; Archbishop Michel Petit of Paris, and Bishop Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue.

Resignation of metropolitan archbishop of Marseille, France, and appointment of new metropolitan archbishop

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the archdiocese of Marseille, France, presented by H.E. Msgr. Georges Pontier.

The Pope has appointed as metropolitan archbishop of Marseille, France, H.E. Msgr. Jean-Marc Aveline, currently titular bishop of Simidicca and auxiliary of Marseille.

H.E. Msgr. Jean-Marc Aveline

H.E. Msgr. Jean-Marc Aveline was born on 26 December 1958 in Sidi Bel Abbès (diocese of Oran, Algeria). After his secondary studies at the Lycée Thiers in Marseille, in 1977 he entered the interdiocesan seminary of Avignon, where he attended the first cycle of theology, and then at the Séminaire des Carmes in Paris, where he carried out his theological studies at the Institut Catholique, obtaining a doctorate in theology in 2000. He also holds a licentiate in philosophy from the Université Paris I et Paris IV Sorbonne.

He was ordained a priest on 3 November 1984 for the archdiocese of Marseille.

Since priestly ordination, he has held the following roles: professor of theology and director of studies at the interdiocesan seminary in Marseille and member of the pastoral team of the Saint-Marcel parish in Marseille; episcopal vicar for permanent formation and member of the pastoral team of the Saint-Pierre – Saint Paul parish in Marseille (1987-2007); head of the Service diocésain des vocations and diocesan delegate for seminarians (1991-1996); founder and director of the Institut des sciences et de théologie des religions of Marseille (ISTR) (1992-2002); director of the Institut Saint-Jean, which in 1998 became the Institut Catholique de la Méditerranée, associated with the Faculty of Theology of Lyon (1995-2013); and teacher in the Faculty of Theology of the Université Catholique de Lyon (1997-2007). Since 2007 he has also served as vicar general of Marseille. In addition, from 2008 to 2012 he was consultor to the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue.

On 19 December 2013 he was elected to the titular see of Simidicca and appointed as auxiliary bishop of Marseille. He received episcopal ordination on 26 January 2014.

Within the French Episcopal Conference he is president of the Council for Interreligious Relations and the new religious currents.

The Holy Father has appointed His Eminence Cardinal Francesco Monterisi, archpriest emeritus of the Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside-the-Walls, as his special envoy to the ceremony for the enthronement of the Emperor of Japan, His Imperial Highness Naruhito, to take place in the Seiden (State Hall) in Tokyo on 22 October 2019.

Resignation and succession of the metropolitan archbishop of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the metropolitan archdiocese of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, presented by His Eminence Cardinal Polycarp Pengo.

He is succeeded by H.E. Msgr. Jude Thaddeus Ruwa’ichi, O.F.M. Cap., currently coadjutor of the same archdiocese.

The Holy Father has appointed as apostolic nuncio in Costa Rica His Excellency the Most Reverend Archbishop Bruno Musarò, of the titular see of Abari, currently apostolic nuncio in the Arab Republic of Egypt and delegate to the League of Arab States.

The Holy Father has appointed as apostolic nuncio in Portugal His Excellency the Most Reverend Archbishop Ivo Scapolo, of the titular see of Tagaste, currently apostolic nuncio in Chile.

Appointment of vice chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences

The Holy Father has appointed as vice chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, with specific competence for the communication sector, the Reverend Msgr. Dario Edoardo Viganò, currently assessor of the Dicastery for Communication.

 

Appointment of Holy See Permanent Observer at the Organization of American States (O.S.A.)

The Holy Father has appointed as Holy See Permanent Observer at the Organization of American States (O.S.A.) the Reverend Msgr. Mark Gerard Miles, nunciature counsellor.

Msgr. Mark Gerard Miles was born in Gibraltar, Great Britain, on 13 May 1967. He was ordained a priest on 14 September 1996 and incardinated in Gibraltar. He holds a degree in canon law.

He entered the Holy See diplomatic service on 1 July 2003, and has worked in the Papal Representations in Ecuador and Hungary, and in the Section for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State.

He knows English, Italian, Spanish and French.
